It’s 3 a.m. and Kim Rockwood, a health care worker, is driving to her patients’ homes — even during the coronavirus pandemic — to help them take medication or go to the bathroom. She’s effectively on call 24/7. Yet she can barely make ends meet. As she explains in the above video, she’s always on the clock, and even though she loves her job, she can’t afford her own health insurance.
Why is someone so vital to our health care system scraping by on poverty wages?
Ms. Rockwood, a certified nursing assistant in Worcester County, Mass., is not alone. The average home care worker in America makes just $16,200 a year. Many of them would make more on unemployment. Someday, most of us will need supportive care. Will there be any workers left when that time comes?

That poor lady, she needs a break or be given the resources to take care of herself. Care work is basically like being a charity worker with no flexibility or ability to plan enjoyable things in your life which is a sin given it often does not cover the bills.

It is much cheaper for society to pay at home caregivers than to put all these patients in nursing homes and most of the patients want to stay home. Not supporting in home caregivers is a classic case of being penny wise and pound foolish.

These people, especially under the pandemic, deserve to get more appreciation and proper compensation for their hard work. It's unbelievable to hear from a health care worker that they are not able to pay for their own health care. I hope the best for these medical workers.

I did CNA work for 15 years. The most I ever made was $12.00 hour. My last job was hospice home care. I loved my job but, I often was overwhelmed with patients that I couldn’t provide adequate care to because they were bariatric patients that required 2 CNAs but, we were short staffed. I couldn’t afford the health insurance my job provided but, I had it anyway and never used it because the the copayments were too high. I couldn’t do it anymore, and I let my certification expire 2 years ago. I miss the patient’s but, I don’t miss being overworked.😐

Amazon's Jeff bezos got tons of money for working his employees through covid but the employees saw nothing. Jeff bezos pocketed the money for his self so he could fly his little spacecraft to the Moon.
These nursing homes are nightmares and they rip their employees off the ones that are doing the hardest work the CNAs. This world disgusts me to my core.
Her employer must offer a healthcare plan. She chooses NOT to have it deducted from her paycheck.

As a CNA who worked in the ICU during the pandemic, I worked like an RN. I have an AS in Biology and continuing my education with a BS in Public Health. I can tell you first that we are underpaid and overworked. An increase in wages is needed for the backbone of healthcare. This beautiful woman with a heart of gold won't be able to retire or even have healthcare to meet her needs as her body will wear down over time. God bless her.
