Inside a Covid I.C.U., Through a Nurse’s Eyes | NYT Opinion | Only Sports And Health

The short film above allows you to experience the brutality of the pandemic from the perspective of nurses inside a Covid-19 intensive care unit.

Opinion Video producer Alexander Stockton spent several days reporting at the Valleywise Medical Center in Phoenix. Two I.C.U. nurses wore cameras to show what it’s like to care for the sickest Covid patients a year into the pandemic.

So many Americans have died in hospitals without family by their side, but they were not alone. Nurses brush patients’ teeth, change their catheters and hold their hands in their final moments.

In just a year, we’ve lost half a million Americans to Covid-19. Vaccinations may be offering some relief, but inside I.C.U.s, nurses continue to contend with the trauma and grief of America’s carousel of death.

  1. This vid actually shows negligence. If you look…these ppl were intubated for more then 14 days…which is a HUGE malpractice violation. If they INDEED needed oxygen they need a trech performed.
So what killed them is NOT covid…but intubation. Intubation destroys lungs…invites infections…
Also, they were obese. So not healthy to begin with.

  2. I am 29. I got the latest vaccine and I still wearing a mask and yet I just got my first COVID. If a person who is much younger and already vaccinated still gets very sick and has trouble sleeping, I can't image why they are holding it…….AND YET!!! Ppl on the street are already no longer wearing a mask even if COVID is still there……

  3. Hats off and massive respect for all nurses. Actually everyone who works at a hospital.. It's like a line of dominoes. Everyone is needed.. My heart is filled with gratitude and thanks. 😍😍

  4. 🌈💞🙂I know there’s a lot of medical people out there that truly care, but it is a heartbreaking, wrenching shame that mostly everything has to do with money. There really shouldn’t be a price value on caring for other people and having enough help. To care for people shouldn’t have anything to do with money, but then again, this is the real world😢

  5. I have leaned and come to believe that sometimes they’re not given enough time to get better, everything shuts down because of insurance reasons, and not enough people to care! WHAT A SHAME!!!!!!!

  6. final moments ??? in moto the signs do not say entering will be the final ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (mo men ts) do they ???? so why is the en re tyre red co un try working fine as electric ????? your ever asking for terrorism or committed murder of a child in beginning funny how media companys involvod happen to be part of the moto fine me group so you can then fine me while on my platform with me i,t and then say corporate ownership of (nhs) like corporate channel 4 above me i demand the data of geo-graphic location now !!!! are you that stupid you think you can charge me for driving on my platform that i uphold that you are and have been trespassing on from the beginning of time ????? and sell me as an advert insurance security politician ???? i demand answers i want police to see whos changing the locks mainly (keys) of my property !!! i mean the dna strings on the dev ice you keep pulling and breaking in to you the corporation are saying you own me as a living man and im imprisoned by the world clearly around me being made of electric and me not having a key to it has this is created pri son per son takes the man and woman child adult for a per son per son job job why cant ann son be a man adult or child not a of my per son

  7. My mom was a pct/cna at our local hospital for 20 years she got Covid and passed at the same hospital on her bday in ICU and now I work there as a aide it’s a experience for sure 😢

  8. I've been Respiratory Therapist for 39yrs…seen a lot of tragic and crazy things over the yrs…but the CV19 was no joke….Christmas morning 2021…myself and 1 other RT gave report to the oncoming shift on 29 patients on ventilators with CV19….was so surreal….we all love the RNs and MDs…but don't forget the ones they call when the chips are down….the ICU RT is a highly skilled and capable clinician that will always be there for you…with little recognition….the red headed stepchild…lol…love my job…married to an ICU Nurse…so it keeps things interesting. God bless. Be kind.

  9. I can only hope that humanity has learned and remember the lessons from the pandemic. I was lucky and was able to be with and say goodbye to my dying mother during the lockdown. I can't imagine what it would feel like have not been able to do that. So many people traumatized by covid-19. Kudos to the nurses and this great story.

  10. I didn’t like how when they were gonna flip the patient someone said this might be the last thing we have to do for her. It sounded kind of mean. But otherwise bravo all especially Sarah

  11. Well over 65M Americans have had zero covid jabs and we are all doing just fine today w no issues or regrets.

If we were truly "being hospitalized and/or dying at higher rates" then it would be relentlessly covered by the media, wouldn't you think?

Yet, we hear nothing of the sort.

  12. Could you even imagine how many disillusioned Americans refuse to believe Covid was real because 1 orange narcissist man child president lied to the public.

I can't believe so many people chose to believe Trump's lies over empirical facts happening right in front of their eyes.

Trump should be tried for crimes against humanity on his mishandling of Covid. Many people didn't have to die had Trump told the truth.

Shameful president and shame on those who vote for this maniac.

  13. lets not forget that they fired nurses who would not inject themselves with the poison shot. lets not forget they lied and denied the shot victims. lets not forget they gave the patients treatments to end their lives instead of treating them. these people were corrupt.
