Alexander Zverev has exacted revenge against Alex de Minaur, eliminating Australia’s world number 10 from the prestigious Indian Wells Masters 1000 event.
Sixth-seeded Zverev wore down de Minaur 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in a two-hour, 47-minute fourth-round battle to book a quarterfinal date with Spanish world number two Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev had lost to de Minaur for the first time at January’s United Cup in Sydney.
But he turned the tables after de Minaur took the opening set and appeared on track to claim a fifth top-10 scalp of the season.
De Minaur’s defeat was his first in eight matches after successfully defending his title in Acapulco earlier this month.
Wimbledon champion Alcaraz also avenged a previous loss to Fábián Marozsán, winning 6-3, 6-3 to be the highest remaining seed left in the men’s draw.
In other results, Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded 11th in Indian Wells, lost to Jiri Lehecka 6-2, 6-4.
Lehecka, ranked 32 in the world, piled up 25 winners against Tsitsipas and will next face either third-seeded Jannik Sinner or big-serving American Ben Shelton.
In the women’s draw, Ukrainian 31st seed Marta Kostyuk defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 16.
Kostyuk will meet another Russian, 28th seed Anastasia Potapova, in the quarterfinals.
Potapova beat 13th seed Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 earlier on Tuesday.
