“I’ve been doing this run since I was a little kid,” he wrote. “The (Terry Fox Foundation) has helped countless people — standing on the shoulders of the great Terry Fox.”

After having his right leg amputated due to cancer, Fox embarked on a cross-Canada run in April 1980 called the Marathon of Hope to raise money and awareness for research into the disease.

Fox began his run in St. John’s, N.L., but was forced to halt his efforts 143 days later in Thunder Bay, Ont., when the cancer spread to his lungs. He died in New Westminster, B.C., in June 1981 at the age of 22.

“Terry’s story and impact on cancer research continues to inspire Canadians across the globe with nearly four million people taking part in the Terry Fox Run each year,” said Denise Dias, vice-president of marketing and communications for the foundation. “Last year’s unprecedented response to our #DearTerry campaign resulted in a record-breaking year for the Terry Fox Run.”

In just two months, last year’s shirt raised $1 million for cancer research.

Beginning April 12, the same day as Fox’s 1980 Marathon of Hope, people will be able to register and start fundraising for the 2024 run, which will take place Sept. 15.

This year’s shirt, produced by adidas, is available for purchase at the foundation’s website.
