The Oakland A’s will drop the city from their team name and go by the ‘Athletics’ next season until their move to Las Vegas.

On Thursday, the organization confirmed that the team will move out of the Bay Area in 2025 and temporarily reside in Sacramento. Their detour to the state capital will stretch to at least the 2027 season.

A spokesperson from the organization told TMZ that the team will not carry Sacramento’s name despite spending several seasons in Sac-Town.

The team will add ‘Las Vegas’ to their name once they move into their $1.5 billion stadium in Sin City.

A date for their relocation has yet to be cemented. However, team officials acknowledged that 2028 may be realistic, allowing their new home to get its finishing touches while the team continues to reside in Sacramento.

With this season marking their final run in Oakland, the 14,000-capacity Sutter Health Park will serve as their temporary home next year.

On Thursday, the NBA’s Sacramento Kings announced the A’s three-year move, with an option for a fourth season if needed. The Kings franchise is a majority owner of the Sacramento River Cats, the five-time Pacific Coast League champions who occupy the ballpark.

While team owner John Fisher expressed his excitement about moving to Las Vegas, the Bay Area fans are not thrilled with the decision.

The A’s opening day was dominated by a parking lot protest as frustrated fans stayed away from the Coliseum. The team played in front of a mostly empty stadium as they moved to a 1-6 record this season.

The sublease in Sacramento comes after a final bid from the City of Oakland to keep the team in the Bay by extending their stadium lease came to no avail.
